Love, Joy, Peace...
John 20:19-23 (read scripture,) Scar-Shaped Stories
"After [Jesus] said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord."
The disciples were hiding, fearing for their lives when the resurrected Christ greets them. To me, this verse is foundational to faith. Jesus is not recognized by the disciples until he shows them his scars. They did not trust that this was, in fact, their Lord until the scars proved Jesus's story.

This week, as we consider what it is to be Pentecost people, we see the new languages and new stories we're invited to tell. Sometimes, in seeking renewal, we wish to erase the scars and avoid the pain we've lived through.

I wonder how our scars identify us. How do our scars allow others to recognize and trust us? Our scars- physical, emotional, spiritual- become part of our witness. How do your scars inform the stories you tell?
PRAY: Crucified Jesus, known because of your scars, redeem those dark and broken parts of us today so that we might be trusted to tell a new story. Amen.
