History

As churches periodically must, we’ve come through a period of change that's been long, sometimes difficult, but at the same time enlightening and inspiring. We have many blessings to celebrate! Our cause for celebration has taken place during a time of great economic challenge in our country and our world. We are able to celebrate not because we in Trumansburg have been untouched by those challenges, but because we’ve chosen to demonstrate the strength of our faith not just when our lives are easy, but day in and day out as God abides with us. Read more about why we're celebrating, and join us in worship and fellowship to learn more!

Pastor Cheryl Peeples

Our Pastor

Our Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) came to us in the Spring of 2009 with their unanimous choice for our new pastor. The congregation enthusiastically endorsed the PNC’s choice, and our newly installed Pastor Cheryl has begun her joyful ministry with us.

Our Music Director

MattfeldOur most recent choir director notified us of his impending departure shortly before Cheryl arrived, and we faced what could have been a long and difficult search. But Andrew Mattfeld arrived and again we had cause to celebrate. Andrew’s talents have been evident as music has begun to resonate once again through our sanctuary.

Our Organist and Pipe Organ

MattfeldDoris Dunlap has been our church organist for more than 35 years. Although her earlier training was in piano, Doris’s acquired skill on our magnificent 15-rank 1923 Casavant/Strauss pipe organ has greatly enriched our worship.

Gifts of Music

Our inventory of musical accoutrements is impressive: a baby grand piano, 5 octaves of Whitechapel handbells, 3 octaves of hand chimes, conga drums, and an extensive music library (and that doesn't include what our talented musicians bring from home, either!) Two of our members are founders of Flute Song, a local flute choir. We have wonderful vocal and bell choirs, and special music adds to our worship experience.

Our Premises

Last winter when a destructive storm with rains, driven by high winds, alerted us to a weakness in the sanctuary roof as well as in the steeple, it hardly seemed cause for celebration. But that event highlighted a structural weakness that, gone unnoticed, could have been catastrophic. Instead the problems were addressed and our sanctuary is structurally sound. We have a beautiful sanctuary space, recently renovated with new trompe l'oeil. Our neighboring Chapel has a kitchen, main hall, meeting spaces, a senior high youth room, and is home to the Trumansburg Community Nursery School.

Our Youth

Our young people traveled to Guatemala to assist an orphanage there in 2009. Their work projects required focus and dedication. They found joy in their heavy labors and in the time spent with the delightful children they were there to serve. These young people were supported by the entire congregation who helped with fund raising as well as direct donations. With Vacation Bible School our younger children benefited by the efforts of many as they brought the love of Christ and the joy of fellowship to the youngest among us.

Our Legacy

Last, but certainly not least, our church has a storied history. It's humbling to learn about all that have come before us, and to think about all who will follow us. That is truly cause to celebrate; that we have a legacy to celebrate and a responsibility to the future. Below you'll find several older pictures of our sanctuary space, and one newer picture (and there are plenty more in our gallery). Past, present and future: it's all worth celebrating...
